Washington University in St. Louis (Wash. U., or WUSTL) is a private research university located in suburban St. Louis,Missouri, United States. Founded in 1853, and named after George Washington, the university has students and faculty from all 50 U.S. states and more than 120 countries.[9] Twenty-two Nobel laureates have been affiliated with Washington University, nine having done the major part of their pioneering research at the university.[10] Washington University's undergraduate program is ranked 14th in the nation and 7th in admissions selectivity by U.S. News and World Report.[11][12] The university is ranked 30th in the world by theAcademic Ranking of World Universities.[13] In 2006, the university received $434 million in federal research funds, ranking seventh among private universities receiving federal research and development support, and in the top four in funding from the National Institutes of Health.[14]

Washington University is made up of seven graduate and undergraduate schools that encompass a broad range of academic fields.[15] Officially incorporated as "The Washington University," the university is occasionally referred to as "WUSTL," an acronym derived from its initials. More commonly, however, students refer to the university as "Wash. U." To prevent confusion over its location, the Board of Trustees added the phrase "in St. Louis" in 1976.[16]

The University of Southern California (known as USC or SC) is a private, not-for-profit, nonsectarian, research university founded in 1880 with its main campus in Los Angeles, California. As California's oldest private research university, USC has historically educated a large number of the region's business leaders and professionals. In recent decades, the university has also leveraged its location in Los Angeles to establish relationships with research institutions throughout Asia and the Pacific Rim. Reflecting the status of Los Angeles as a global city, USC has the largest number of international students of any university in the United States.[6] In 2011, USC was named among the Top 10 Dream Colleges in the nation.[7]

As of 2011, USC enrolls 17,414 students in its four-year undergraduate program.[3] USC is also home to 20,596 graduate and professional students in a number of different programs, including business, law, social work, and medicine.[3] The university has a "very high" level of research activity and received $560.9 million in sponsored research from 2009 to 2010.[8] USC sponsors a variety of intercollegiate sports and competes in the NCAA Pacific-12 Conference. Members of the sports teams, the Trojans, have won 96 NCAA team championships, ranking them third in the nation, and 361 NCAA individual championships, ranking them second in the nation.[9]Trojan athletes have won 287 medals at the Olympic games (135 golds, 87 silvers and 65 bronzes), more than any other U.S. university.[10] If USC were a country, it would rank 12th in most Olympic gold medals.[10]
